Surprising Yourself

Today I spoke to the Vermont Dowsers Society. This is a group of people who've learned how to harness their intuition and sensitivity so fully that they can find water in the ground, illness in the body, or a lost wallet. Interesting group. My charge was to inspire them with my experience as an eclectic, spiritual teacher and to share ideas about how to increase one's sensitivity to "magical source energy", the natural intelligence of the universe. As often happens, I walked in with very little in the way of a prepared speech. In fact, any attempt to use my intellect to design a message in advance created only fear that I
wasn't the guy for the job. So instead I intended for truth to be spoken through me, and got up in front of them with nothing but real curiosity about what I might say. As I remained open and present, I found myself brimming over with useful ideas to share, funny stories to tell, and powerful words of inspiration. There's no way I could have been that eloquent by planning it. When we're called upon to meet a challenge, we must balance our preparation with a willingness to "wing it." Don't shrink from an opportunity because you can't imagine how you'll rise to it. Trust that there's more inside you than you realize. Then go out there and surprise yourself!

"The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable...For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step
out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers."

-M. Scott Peck
